1808 Court Case:
Brothel Payments

Submitted by Dave Ryan

From The News, October 9, 1808
Queen-Square (London) Magistrates Court

Ann Lloyd, the mistress of a brothel, in Charles Street, Covent Garden, appeared to answer a complaint by a girl of 16, named Kinsley, who lodged in her house for six weeks, and during that period paid the landlady £ 47. 7s, the wages of prostitution.

Miss Kinsley stated, that she paid a guinea and a half a week for board, and six shillings a head (sic-ED) for each gentleman who visited at her lodgings, to the number of 72, amounting to £ 21. 12s., together with £ 6. 14s incidental expenses, and therefore she claimed from the defendant a balance of £ 9. 12s. but when she was going away last Saturday, she was refused her clothes.

Mr. Fielding reprobated the conduct of the defendant in keeping a house of this infamous nature, and cautioned her that her future conduct would be strictly inspected. She then agreed to pay the complainant five guineas, and return her clothes.

Submitted by Dave Ryan, who want to know when was the last time you could get a good night's entertainment for the cost of three pages of an Osprey.
