by Paul Chamberlain, Research Officer, Napoleonic Association
On 15 January 1994 three events will occur that concern this gentleman. It will be his sixtieth birthday; he retires from the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst; and his latest book - On The Napoleonic Wars - will be published by Greenhill. Dr Chandler's career has been one of variety. He is currently Head of the Department of War Studies at the Royal Military Academy, and has lectured extensively at military colleges and academies throughout the world. He was an historical consultant for the BBC adaptation of Tolstoy's War and Peace, and you will have seen him in this consultancy capacity on the recent Channel 4 series Great Commanders. If you have an interest in the period then no doubt you will have read some of his books, such as; Waterloo: The Hundred Days, Napoleon, The Illustrated Napoleon, to name but a few. No doubt his retirement will be an active one, ultimately benefiting us amateur historians with the publication of new works. I am sure that the readers of NN&Q will join me in wishing David Chandler our best wishes for his retirement, which we hope will be a long and productive one.
