The Battle of
La Corunna Road 1936

Wargame After-Action Battle Report

By Mark Lampe, with help from Jaime De Miguel and Michele Armellini

At 1999 Recon, Tampa, FL

Saturday Afternoon's game "La Coruna Road" was I think a "hit" also, with a massive Nationalist force ( 7 squadron Cavalry column and Ventorro del Cano column) vs. Republican 3rd Brigade, supported by the Garibaldinis, a coy of T-26 tanks, and on turn 2 the "Nosotros" bttn showed up to help out. The 4th bttn/3rd Rep Brigade bugged out of Pozuelo after a 4-squadron Moorish Cavalry charge supported by a couple of Tabors of Moorish Infantry, but the Republican left flank just south of Aravca held out verses a 3-squadron Nationalist Cavalry charge supported by the 2 coys of Panzer I's.This was mainly due to the Garibaldinis and a supporting 75mm gun anchoring that flank in a stand of woods. What a thrill to see an HE-only weapon take out armor with its negative penetration! After about 10 turns of play I declared it a *marginal* Nationalist victory as they controlled Pozuelo but got rocked so hard on the left Rep flank. I do believe that if we had more time (and I had a better working voice) the Republicans could have re-taken Pozuelo.

We had 4 Republican players and I think 6 Nationalist players; some were new to the system and the time period but things moved along pretty well. All the figures, guns and vehicles were 20mm supplied by HPC in the USA or Bandera Miniatures in the UK & Europe.
