Book Review

by Rolfe Hedges

BY J M BUENO. 3800 PTAS. PUBLISHED BY ALMENA - MADRID. PAPERBACK A5 SIZE. 286 pages, SPANISH TEXT WITH ENGLISH CAPTIONS.

I was amazed and surprised to hear in May this year that this classic book was due to be republished, more so to see it appear in June. And what a superb book it is.

It is a revised and updated version of the 1971 classic study on SCW uniforms. It has over 100 b/w photographs many unseen, and borrowed by the author from personal collections. There are several added plates covering such troop types as the 150th nationalist light division 1936, pilot from the Legionary Aviation, a soldier from Dr Albinana's legion (a unit raised within the Spanish Nationalist party) 1936, a Hungarian I.B., British and Canadian medics, Russian tank crew member 1936, Catalan Red Cross member, and Catalan Mozos (3 uniforms). A lot of the Republican uniforms featured in the original have been redrawn.

There is one page of flags which differs from the original book. And the colour pages illustrating ranks, insignia and cuff details have been replaced by black and white ones.

The photographs are worth a mention, the pages covering cavalry and the columna Fantasma de Uribarri are particularly interesting.

Again this book is excellent and a simple must have to any reader of the SCW.

Availability: Some of you will be holidaying in Spain this year so keep you eyes peeled in local book shops. But they will probably only be available in the larger cities. UK readers please contact Griff Henderson (Tercio books) who has supplies from time to time, I know he had 20 copies of the Bueno book earlier this month.
