Wargaming Hohenfriedberg

I doubt that anything approaching the success of the Bayreuth Dragoons could be simulated in a wargame, but there is one lesson that wargamers can learn from this battle; that is, to hold back a heavy cavalry reserve to unleash on the opponent's weak or broken units. Such action serves to turn a defeat into a major disaster.

As a wargame, Hohenfriedberg lends itself very well to two different scenarios that corrspond with the first battle between the Prussians and Saxons and the second phase of the battle against the Austrians. One might fight the Saxon scenario as an encounter battle with two advance guards marching onto the wargame table. The outcome of this battle could set up the second sceanario with the Austrians. For example, if the Saxons win, then the Prussian left wing could find itself fighting both Saxons and Austrians.

The following orders of battle should help you recreate the battle and are printed with the permission and courtesy of George Nafziger. The names of the brigade commanders are found in Die Schlachten Friedrichs Des Grossen by Dorn and Englemann.
