1757: The Advance to Nismes

July 18, 1757

Translated and Edited With Additional Materials By Neil Cogswell

This morning, the Right Wing of the Second Line marched to make camp near Gabel.

Order of March from Nismes to Gabel for the Right Wing of the Second Line of the Army

The Right Wing of the Second Line of the Army marched in two columns.

The 1st Column, comprising the cavalry under the orders of the Grand Prior of the Knights of Malta Graf Emmanuel von Kolowrat, took the road through Röhr-Wasser and Neüland, where it passed the Polzen on the wooden bridge to join the highroad to Gabel. It then passed that town to its left and encamped.

General Kheul led the 2nd Column, composed of the infantry. It traversed the town of Nismes, crossed the bridge near the gibbet and followed the highroad almost to Gabel, where it then encamped.

Yesterday evening, we learned that the Prussians had dismantled their camp in the afternoon and that the whole army of the Prince of Prussia is marching towards Kamnitz. The Prince had marched his army on the night of 16th/17th, as soon as he was certain of the reduction of Gabel. They went first to Politz near Zandau and then to Kamnitz on the road from Zandau to Rumburg. During this movement by the Prussians, 152 deserters came over to the Austrians.

We hear that General Beck is at Rumburg and that General Macquire is in position to attack Zittau.
