1757: The Advance to Nismes

July 17, 1757

Translated and Edited With Additional Materials By Neil Cogswell

During the night, the Prussians entirely evacuated the castle at Reichstadt. Two companies of Austrian grenadiers immediately occupied it. Subsequently, two battalions and the hussars and Croats, who had been encamped nearby, have reinforced the new garrison.

Intelligence of the Prussians is still unclear, but their abandonment of Reichstadt increases our belief that they intend to retreat. As a result, the Right Wing of the Second Line has been ordered to hold itself ready, at immediate notice, to march to sustain General Macquire, who is on his way towards Zittau with the troops who had taken Gabel.

Yesterday, our hussars captured 11 Prussian hussars together with a Mounted Jäger. The latter was carrying a missive to the Commandant of Zittau, where there are said to be 5 battalions in garrison.

General Nádasdy remains encamped at Gastorff. He reports that the Prussians facing him are about 18 to 20,000 strong. They are encamped on the heights at Lobositz, from whence a corps of 6 to 8,000 men have re-crossed the Elbe and marched back to Leitmeritz.
