A Few Personal Notes
of Thanks

Review and Outlook

by Jim Purky

I want to thank a lot of people for making the Journal such a success. No one person could do everything by himself. For starters, I wish to thank all of the members for subscribing to the Journal and making it all possible. Without your subscriptions and interest in the period, the Journal would not be possible.

Additional thanks go to all of the vendors and dealers who support the Journal through advertising, and who support our annual convention by attending as dealers. With respect to the annual SYWA convention, my deepest thanks go to Paul Petri, Brian Vizek, Dean West, Herb Gundt and Tod Kershner for hosting and contributing to the running of conventions over the past seven years. Thanks to their efforts, I think that we have the best wargame convention in the United States, bar none.

By the way, that reminds me that next year's convention will be in South Bend at the end of March. I don't have the dates yet, but information will be available in the next issue. I understand that we may move the game hall to the 20th floor of the Holiday Inn tower, where we have had the banquet the past two years. The room has glass windows on three sides, providing a spectacular view of South Bend and the St. Joseph Valley. This will provide better lighting for the games, and frankly, should be a better locale what with the extra space. The banquet would then be held in the Oak Room on the sixth floor, where we have usually held the games.

On the production end of things, I would like to thank Tim O'Connor for helping me establish the general layout and form of the Journal. Additional kudos go to Paul Dangel for providing some spectacular maps for the Journal and will continue to do so going forward. And last but not least, a special thanks to all the individuals who contributed articles to the Journal. We have really been fortunate to have people such as Peter Wilson (numerous translations from the Prussian General Staff Histories and other German sources), Peter Lenders (the Dutch army special issue),

Brian Vizek (Ottoman Turk special issue) and all the other contributors to these pages. You can't imagine how much easier it is for an editor when someone sends in an article. I still have a good backlog of articles that I am passing on to Jim Mitchell. So if your article hasn't appeared in print yet, don't worry, it will. I encourage everyone to write articles and send them to Jim Mitchell to help him get started on Volume XI. Don't feel like you need to be a professional author or a PHD in history to write an article. If you have an interest in a topic, then that's all you really need to be an author. As for historical expertise, there are few"experts" in our association, and those that are will be the first to tell you that they don't know everything. So please do not feel intimidated about writing. Your opinion is as valuable as the next person's. The Journal can always use figure, book and rules reviews, or a narrative about a wargaine project that you are working on (these are very popular with the members) or a convention report.
