Eclaireurs de la Garde Imperial

Uniform: Lancers Polonaise

by Paul L. Dawson

The young guard lancers, in the main, came from the disbanded 3rd regiment. The 3rds uniform was identical to that of the 1st regiment, except that yellow/gold replaced white/silver in all respects.

However the regulation for the 3eme Eclaireurs stipulated that the uniform of the Vistula Lancers coloured like the 1ere regiment was to be worn. The uniform was the same as the first regiment, except that a blue and white stripped kummerband was worn around the waist, and two white epaulettes were worn at the shoulder. Other ranks transferred from the old guard companies retained the aiguillette.

On campaign, a white pompom was worn in the Czapka, and in full dress a crimson plume. The schabraque was of the same pattern as the 1ere regiment, but was laced blue, and had no embroidered devices.

Trumpeters wore a simplified version of the uniform worn by the 1st regiment. An example of a Kurtka for the 1st regiment survives in Warsaw museum, but lacks any silver lace, and could theoretically have belonged to the young guard squadrons and therefore the Eclaireurs. There is also a troopers kurtka in the possession of Jean-Francois-Remy-Neris. It is the same cut as for the 1st regiment but lacks the silver lace to collar, lapels and cuffs.
