Roger Daltrey, lead singer of the legendary rock band The Who, takes viewers back in time to experience with him the day-to-day realities of some of American history's greatest moments. Daltrey, a keen history enthusiast, goes on location to demonstrate the challenges of surviving history's epic adventures, explorations, and battles. This series consists of nine 30-minute episodes, screened on Fridays at 6pm starting 30th January.

Programmes are titled ‘Surviving ....’ and look at a range of subjects from primitive man, the Colorado River, the Wild West, Buffalo Hunts, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and a Civil War Soldier. One programme is of particular interest to readers of this magazine.

Surviving an 1812 Battleship Programme 6 - Friday 5th March 2004

Roger Daltrey finds out what life was like aboard the U.S. Brig Niagara--a War of 1812 ship commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry in his defeat of the British Royal Navy at the Battle of Lake Erie. Roger joins a working crew for three days, where he learns that life was hell for the common sailor. The gutsy rocker learns how to set up his hammock, tastes naval delicacies like Dog's Body and Spotted Dick, mans the oars of a longboat, and even climbs 50 feet above a swaying deck to loose a sail.
