Napoleon's Campaigns in Miniature

Book Review

By Dave Watkins

Bruce Quarrie, Published by Patrick Stephens Ltd. Revised, expanded fourth edition. £ 14.95. Hard Cover 216pp plus 8 colour plates.

This is a good book to have. If you don't own or like me your 1977 edition has seen better days go and buy a copy. Why? Is this the definitive work on Napoleonic Wargaming? Probably not but its as close as you are going to get. If you have never seen a copy it is full of useful information on tactics, organisation, basic uniform guides and a set of playable rules. The section on campaigning has plenty of useful information on logistics and supply problems. If you already have the book, the expanded section includes a new introduction, a chapter on the War of 1812 (Stifled yawn!) and a very useful chapter on Naval Warfare of the period. This last section at last enabled me to understand something of Napoleonic naval warfare. It also includes a simple to understand set of Naval rules. They must be because I got into them first time!

The eight colour pictures are of various wargame reconstructions, most are inspiring, some are `iffy'.

Overall if you haven't got a copy, I strongly recommend that you go and buy one. If you already got one, I would think long and hard before parting with £ 14.95 for two extra chapters and some minor changes to the rules section, unless of course you are a dedicated Quarrie follower or the dogs have had your copy.
