This will be the 8th International Anglo-French Naval Historians Conference, to be held from 30th April to 3rd May at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. The period from the beginning of the 18th to the middle of the 19th century was one in which few areas of European culture and society were left untouched by the dramatic advances in scientific knowledge. Science and the French and British Navies takes as its theme the many ways in which these developments affected the navies, their ships and naval infrastructure. Speakers at the conference will discuss key issues in shipbuilding, the health of seamen in the navies and the influence of scientific thought on port buildings, naval infrastructure and naval architecture.

For full details of this four-day conference, contact Miss Helen Jones, Research Administrator, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London, SE10 9NF. Telephone 020 8312 6716 or email research@nmm.ac.uk
