1998 Conferences

Napoleonic Association Autumn Conference

This will be held at the National Army Museum on Saturday 26th September. Subjects and speakers will be:

    The 42nd at Toulouse by Tom Greenshields.
    The Battlefield of Austerlitz by John Salmon.
    Advance to Contact (the Battle of Austerlitz) by Tim Hicks.
    A View in the Fog (the Battle of Austerlitz) by Dave Hollins.
    The Uniforms and Organisation of the Wurttemburg Army, 1793-1815 by John Henderson.

The Nile 200 Years Conference

This one-day conference will take place on Saturday 12 September 1998 at the Victory Club, HMS Nelson, Portsmouth. It will mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of the Nile, and is being organised jointly by The Nelson Society, The 1805 Club and the Society for Nautical Research.

Naval and military historians and Nelson specialists, including Brian Lavery and Michael Duffy, will present and discuss current thinking on different aspects of the Egyptian campaign, including the Battle of the Nile and its aftermath. The conference will be chaired by Colin White, Deputy Director of the Royal Naval Museum, Portsmouth. The event will begin at 10.00am and the total fee for the conference including morning coffee, lunch, tea and the cocktail party on the lower gun deck of HMS Victory is £ 45.00. The Nelson Decade

The Nelson Decade commemorates the major bicentenaries of Nelson's greatest battles and achievements, culminating in a grand international public celebration across the whole country on Trafalgar Day in 2005. The Decade was launched in 1995 by the Official Nelson Celebrations Committee (ONCC). In 1997 its members supported major international events celebrating the Battle of Cape St Vincent and Nelson's ill-fated attack on Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

International Festival of the Sea

This will be taking place in Portsmouth Harbour over the weekend of 28/31 August 1998. It is a celebration of all things to do with the sea, both military and otherwise, and covers the whole period of history of the Royal Navy and man's involvement on and around water. The Festival is based around the ships on display at Portsmouth and the Royal Naval Museum (including HMS Victory), and involves street entertainers; an 18th Century street market; and 18th/19th Century naval activities, as well as music and displays from the modern Navy, and up to a thousand ships from all over the world including the great Tall Ships. The event will be open from 9.00am until 1.00am each day.

Napoleonic Fair 1999

The sixth Napoleonic Fair will be held on 21 February 1999 at the same venue, London's Royal National Hotel. The hours of opening will be extended to become 9.30am to 4.30pm, and Greenhill Books are currently giving thought to guest speakers, re-enactment presentations etc. and suggestions are welcomed.
