Book News from Chatham Publishing

Chatham will be publishing The Victory of Seapower: Winning the Napoleonic War 1806-1814 by Richard Woodman, in June of this year, price £ 30.

The victory at Trafalgar marked the beginning of nine years of expansion and domination by the Royal Navy right across the globe. This, the fourth of the Chatham Pictorial Histories devoted to the great wars of 1793-1815, charts the events of those years, including the Battle of San Domingo in 1806, the attack on Copenhagen in 1807 and the capture of the French base on Mauritius in 1810. Also covered is the Navy's crucial support of Wellington's army in the Peninsular War. Thematic sections feature the skills of the seaman and the lives of prisoners of war.

The prints and drawings collection of the National Maritime Museum is, as ever, the source for the 300 contemporary illustrations, which bring to life a period of British naval history often neglected, but every bit as vital and fascinating as what had gone before. Richard Woodman is best known as the author of the Nathanial Drinkwater series of novels set during the later Napoleonic War at sea.

By the time you read this, Chatham will have published Nelson and The Nile: The Mediterranean Campaign of 1798 by Brain Lavery, price £ 25. The Battle of the Nile was the first of Nelson's great victories, where his crushing defeat of the French fleet in Aboukir Bay dealt a fatal blow to Napoleon's attempt to conquer Egypt. 1998 is the 200th anniversary of the battle and this book gives a full and fascinating account of the Mediterranean campaign of 1798. As well as a detailed account of the entire campaign, the author also gives a fascinating insight into naval strategy and tactics of the period, and shipboard life and routine in both the British and French navies. It is also an account of Nelson's first fleet command, where the esprit de corps which won Trafalgar was forged.
