Battleground Ltd. has been around since 1983 making fine buildings, castles, forts, fortifications and terrain features. They have pioneered the use of Urethane foam for models, which they mould under pressure in closed moulds. Their catalogue contains over 100 items and is consistently updated with new releases. I recently received a sample of their new designer's range, 040 Jettied House 15mm scale (£ 4.95). The model is well proportioned, the brickwork is well defined, as is the thatch on the roof. I cannot fault the `engraved' detail, for example the planking on the door, the louvres on the window shutters and the large door hinges, which even have representations of bolt heads!. The Urethane Foam has painting properties similar to Stonecast that is to say slightly absorbent and can be easily carved with a modelling knife if desired (?). I recommend this product for one reason only, ( design features apart, they are down to personal aesthetics), the model appears to be indestructible. The nature of the material is such that the model will survive an impact that would destroy a Stonecast, and even possible a Resin model. This I proved, by accidentally dropping it on its chimney stack, which protrudes a good 1/2" from the model's roof. Not a scratch, chip or dent appeared. Further testing involving deliberate dropping onto a garage floor and handing it over to my son and heir, (aged 18 months, guaranteed to destroy anything of value!). The net result was that the model is now in the same condition as when it was delivered (apart from teeth marks in a wall!). More Reviews
