Western edge of Tremblay looking west. Marchais on left. Here, Ricard's weak division launched its counterattack to retake the village. The village right of centre is Haute Epine, the centre of the Russian line.

Above: Taken from Le Bois Jean, looking west. Russian artillery was drawn up on the ridge in the middle ground. Church tower of L'Epine is at far right.

Below: Taken on the lane leading north out of La Haute Epine, looking east. Wassiltchicov's cavalry formed up here.

Above: Taken from the ridge line on which the Russian artillery was drawn up on, looking east towards the French line (not visible). Houses on the right are Le Bois Jean with Bois de Courmont behind. It was across this ground that the Russians advanced at the start of the battle and were cut up by the Guard Cavalry as they withdrew.

Below: Taken from La Chaise, looking east towards the Frenchline, with Les Grenaux in the center--held by the Russians and taken by the Old Guard. On right, "Little Paris" road that effectively marked the center line of the battlefield.

Above: From Les Grenaux, looking south east. On horizon line to the right is Marchais, and on the left, farm of La Motte. The horizon line is roughly the French line.

Below: Taken from the centre of the French line, looking east. On left, behind trees, church spire of Marchais, on right, farm of La Motte, in centre, "Little Paris" road. Large wood on the horizon line left of center is the Bois de Courmont.

Above: From Prussian line looking south. On right, farm of les Tourneux. This shows the flat ground that Yorck's Prussians advanced across to contact Michel's 2nd Old Guard Division.

Below: On "Little Paris" road looking south towards Marchais--the route taken by two battalions of Old Guard when the village was finally taken at about 5 p.m. by the French.
