By Ed Parker, NA publicity officer
from campaign notes by Mike Freeman

Members intending to either take part or watch this event, will be interested in the following information sent in by Andy Mullen, one of the organisers of the weekend display. Besides the re-enactment, there are other activities occurring that all members may participate in.

The Martello Towers of Folkestone: Guided Walk

7.00pm Friday 13 June and 7.00pm Saturday 14 June

Nigel Armitage-Smith, Blue Badge Guide and member of the Folkestone Heritage Research Group (affiliated to the Napoleonic Association), will be leading two guided walks around the six Martello Towers of west Folkestone exclusively for NA members (maximum 30) attending the re-enactment weekend on 14/15 June. A minibus will be provided to shuttle walkers from East Cliff departing from the East Cliff Pavilion at 6.45pm to the start/finish point at the Grand Hotel, The Leas. Members may alternatively take their cars and park outside the Metropole/Grand Hotels for the walks which both start at 7.00pm and finish at 9.00pm.

Stout footwear is advised. The distance is 3½ miles with some slopes and steep gradients though it follows waymarked trails and foot paths throughout. The cost is £3.00 per head, which includes souvenir handouts. If you are interested in going on either of these walks, then simply turn up at the start point.

Martello Tower Opening Times

Martello Tower No.3 will be open from 10.30am until 9.30pm on the Saturday and Sunday of the Napoleonic weekend. It is planned to run coach trips to visit the other Martello Towers at £3.00 per head during the weekend. The admission price for NA members will be 75p adults and 50p children (take your membership card). Anyone wishing to help man the tower would be very welcome, either in uniform or civvies. The normal times of opening are 10.30am to 5.30pm, daily 1 May until 3 September.

Dymchurch Tower No.24 will be open 11.30am until 4.30pm, weekends only. For further details contact Andy Mullen, 20 Stuart Road, Folkestone, Kent CT19 6NL. Tel. 01303 244733. Incidentally, Andy will be presenting a short talk on the Martello Towers of Folkestone at the Napoleonic Association Autumn Conference on 4 October.
