New Royal Armouries Museum

The Royal Armouries is Britain's oldest museum. It holds the national collection of arms and armour and is housed at the Tower of London. However, the limited display space available in the Tower has meant that only about 10% of the total collection has been shown at any one time. The Royal Armouries is therefore opening a new museum to display additional items to those on show at the Tower of London.

The Royal Armouries opens on The Waterfront in Leeds on 30 March 1996. It should prove to be one of the biggest and most exciting new attractions in the country, built at a cost of £42.5 million. The displays will include items never before shown to the public.

The museum will chart the development and use of arms and armour spanning over 3,000 years of man's history and unfolds in five themed galleries; war, hunting, self-defence, tournament and the great civilisations of the Orient. Each display will be hands-on, with an opportunity to study the exhibits, talk to special interpreters, use audio-visual touch screen displays, and view films and computer workstations.

The location of the museum is just off the M1 and M621 motorways, on The Waterfront, Leeds.

From April until September there will be displays of jousting and hunting skills in the Tiltyard. The museum will be open every day except Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Opening times: 1 April-31 October 10.00am - 6.00pm.
1 November - 31 March 10.00am - 5.00pm.
Admission rates: Adults 6.95 pounds, Students and Senior Citizens 5.95 pounds, Children 3.95 pounds.
