In The Times of 23 may I noticed an article about a diary written by Corporal John Parker of the 20th Foot that has recently been discovered in an attic and placed for auction at Bonhams. It was expected to fetch £5,000. Parker fought in the Peninsular War and was part of the garrison on Saint Helena while Napoleon resided there. He writes about the battles of Roncevalles and Pamplona, and his opinions of Longwood House while Bonaparte was there. No doubt this work will eventually be published for all of us Napoleonic enthusiasts. Makes you want to rummage through your own attic doesn’t it! It goes to show that there are still works of the period to be found and made available to the likes of us!
