I have it on good authority that a comet is headed our way! I have also discovered that this one is as big as that which appeared in 1811, and was said by some to portend the downfall of Napoleon! Before you rush off to have a last painting session of those wargames figures that have been languishing in the cupboard since you bought them at the First Empire Show last year, and to make your peace with your neighbour / wife / last wargames opponent you thrashed, let me allay your fears. The comet in question will miss the Earth by 200 million kilometres, so you can put those figures back in the cupboard! What brought this particular news item on was an article in New Scientist (12 August 1995 p.5) about large comets that pass the earth every century or so. The one that is heading our way is very large (about 100 kilometres across), and the last giant one was in 1811, and was linked to Napoleon’s fortunes, or lack of them the following year; which brings me on to other items of news.
