The Battle
The besieged fortress is on a long table edge, about 3/4 on the right of the mongol side. Mongol camp with siege machines and forced captives infantry is on the immediate left of the fortress.
The russians and Lithuanians are arriving form the other side, lithuanians on the right and Russians on the left.
Russian household cavalry advance in packed columns.
The Mongol orde is on the far left of the battleline.
Lithuanians are in front of them, all heavily armed cavalry.
The Lithuanians are ready to charge.
Lithuanian infantry follows on the left in columns of march.
A view of the Mongol camp. the trembling infantry hordes are very worried for being left alone.
The russians deploy in battleline to start their rush to the camp, no enemy in sight!
The full Lithuanian battleline deploy in front of the Mongol allies.
The unstoppable advance of the Lithuanians.
The central battle of the Mongol army is mainly composed of allied troops, they face broken ground and a large numebr of russian light infantry. Sone are wheeling on the right since russian cavalry is menacing the camp.
The russian flower of cavalry crossed the small river and deploys for battle, they are lightly screened by mercenary horse archers.
Another view of this wonderful host.
What follows happens very quickly, no pictorial documents are available.
On the right the Lithuanians charge, but the Mongol Commander Wotolo is very smart. He deploys his horse archers in close ranks. The Lithuanians start their charge piecemeal and they are slaughtered before even coming to contact. Three units retreat in disorder, the rest of the army stops.
On the left you may see a gentle hill in between the fort and the broken ground. Between this gap the russian armies move very quickly. Before the Mongol allies manage to close the gap, the russian cavalry lower their lances and charges the Mongol camp.
This single charge is enough for the whole infantry host. Most of the infantry is trampled by the russian cavalry, the rest routs leaving the siege machines undefended. There is no possibility to recover the catapults before they are put on fire by the russian cavalry. The Mongols have to leave the siege and retire.
The fort has been saved! Few casualties have been suffered by the Russians, only the Lithuanian allies have suffered by the deadly Mongol arrows. On the Mongol side, also they have suffered very few casualties, but the captives forced as besiegiers and all the siege equipment, and camp, is lost.
