Volley And Bayonet
This rule set has been designed by Frank Chadwick lon ago, since 2007 we have a revised edition.
Here is a good link: http://volleyandbayonet.wordpress.com.
I am planning to use it with 2mm figures, without using large sabot bases, but allowing one base per fighting factor.
The assumption od Chadwick is that one sabot base front should allow 1500 men in a three rank line on 300 yards. I will use a unit front of 8cm instead of 3″ and retain the movement in inches, I use a front of two battalions, each being a 4cm base.
- The equivalent of a regimental base, of 2-3 strength points, will be done using 2-3 bases, two in the first line and the eventual third battalion just behind.
- A massed brigade base will be done with a corresponding number of battalion bases, in line or column, a 4 strong unit thus using four bases.
- An artillery battery will be represented using two 2cm bases, occupying half an infantry front base. I have limbered and unlimbered bases.
- An artillery battalion will use four of such bases, occupying exactly 8cm, like an infantry unit.
- A skirmish unit is made of a single 4 cm base.
One base is removed per strength point lost, two bases in the case of artillery.
Generals are placed on round bases, of varying sizes, depending on rank.
I will post some explanatory photos soon.
Some bases used as status, to be added to the units and generals:
- Stationary troops: ammunition wagon.
- Exhaustion points: a number of supply wagons equal to the number of formation exhaustion points, they are placed close to formation general.
- Marching troops: cavalry and infantry marching bases are added to marching units as needed, or ammunition wagons for artillery, to reach the following number of bases, 40mm deep, including the unit bases:
- linear infantry and cavalry, skirmish cavalry: 6 bases.
- massed infantry and cavalry: 8 bases.
- artillery battalions: 8 bases.
- artillery batteries: 4 bases
- Cavalry safe units: a base holding an infantry square can be added to a unit, to remember that it is cavalry safe.
- Disordered: I do not know yet what to use. I might try a disarrayed line base, with blocks not aligned.
