VLB test battle 3
29th June 2012.
Yesterday we played the third test battle using my computerized version of the rules. This version of the program has a graphical interface to handle the battle, and additional computers, if available, can be used to write orders for the two sides. One computer is for the referee which handles events, changes of situations, fires, melees.
Here are some pictures. We have played the game using 2mm (1mm actually) troops from Knigth and Dennis, figures from the ’80s painted last months.
We have played a scenario based on the Castiglione Battle (1797), using Massena Division fighting two Austrian columns on the planes between Castiglione and Solferino
Here are the french troops awaiting in column.
Three Demi-Brigades on the forefront, Massena HQ in the field with the edging tree lines.
The Austrian player computer showing the command chain, the game clock.
The austrian lines are moving to attack
The battlefield as seen by the austrians. The redoubt of Monte xx on the lower part of the picture.
The austrians are approaching!
We have stopped after playing the preliminary bombardment and one overwhelming attack of two austrian brigades against a battered bombarded french brigade, which immediately routed!
Overall an interesting game for me as a developer of the program, I must thank my fellow player Maurizio which helped me in evaluating the program and suggested the following modifications:
- allow for artillery fires taking into account earlier start (on gaming mechanics just allow fire factors > 1).
- need to recheck fire losses.
- distance between commands should be asked only once during a bound.
