BBB Albuera
Today Robert and I played a nice BBB scenario on the battle of Albuera. We chose to play the full-size scenario available on the Group site.
The French decided to attack from the south, so the spanish and the British had to make a steep turn to face them.
In order to meet the french from the south, the whole spanish host had to be redeployed towards the town, leaving the high ground (objective) behind.
A large melee came out at the bridge just West of Albuera, where the main French columns crossed the river. For about four hours two veteran French regiments tried to break through a British Guards brigade, supported by guns.
An addition british light brigade added its weight in this struggle but the ebb and flow of this fight ended only after a lot of hard fighting.
On the south the French cavalry charged very soon the spanish infantry, but did not manage to make a real breakthrough. A lot of fighting there as well, the french managing to push both spanish and French back towards Albuera. This was achieved too slowly to then attack the town itself.
Some anglo-portuguese reinforcements, the ones from Badajoz, were sent to counter this southern attack.
The battle was a hard fought draw.
Here some nice photos.
