Basing for Warre
I have to start my new vintage project, to give my 40+ years old figures a new life. Next Monday we will play this Warre ruleset I had printed and in my list since maybe two years. In my printed copy I found some thoughts I had on re-base my figures.
I would need the following base sizes. I will base my army on the same base sized used for later periods, 50mmX50mm for infantry and cavalry, 50mmx100mm for artillery:
- 50mmx50mm rounded corners: battalion gun and two gunners
- 50mmx25mm: 2 shooters (needed for Imperial regiments and tercios)
- 50mmx100mm rounded corners: artillery
- round bases of various sizes for Commanders (single figures, 50mm diameter) and Generals (3+ figures, 70-80mm diameter).
- Pikes, 6 figures. Pikes levelled will be based on 50×75 or even 50×100.
- Shot, 4 figures. I feel they should be on a more open order respect to pikemen and later infantry equipped with bayonets.
- musketeers included in some Tercio pike blocks will be on 50×25 bases, two figures single column (one figure behind the other) per base. Two such bases will make up a standard 50×50 base.
- Infantry command figures: they will be on separate bases, 50×25, to allow to re-use the same pikes and shots for multiple nations . One officer, One standard and one drummer.
- Cavalry, 2 figures. May think of basing light cavalry on individual 25×50 bases or on round-cornered 50×50.
- 25mmx50mm pill shaped bases for light horse, single figures.
- infantry Skirmishers, 2 figures on 40mm round base
Command bases
My plan is to base command figures separately, so that I may swap flags when needed.
- Infantry Command figures will be on 50mmx25mm bases, one officer (right), one drummer (left) and one standard bearer (centre).
- Cavalry Command figures will be based separately, one Officer and one standard bearer or trumpeter on 25mmx50mm bases. Might also become part of a unit or not, to be decided.
Basing sketches
The sketches do not include cavalry units, but they would simply be made of four bases for the 100mmx100mm size units and three bases for the 150mmx50mm units.
Light cavalry, where rules suggest 100mm diameter round bases, I strongly prefer to mount individually, with 4 models per unit. In the game bases would be touching each other with no need to keep then aligned, so the 100mm unit size would be maintained.
