Antietam:
Sunken Road

A Johnny Reb Scenario

by George Anderson

The Wargame:

The following scenario is based on the assault of the two Union divisions on the Sunken Road and lasts from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm. I have not allowed for the small but ineffectual Rebel counterattack from the Dunker Church area. Anderson's Confederate division is treated as green for morale but shoots as average. I have already amalgamated G. B. Anderson's brigade into two units of 240 and 300 men respectively.

Deployment:

As the map; the two forward Confederate units belong to Rode's Brigade. Anderson's Division arrives on turn five, Maurin's and Huger's Batteries arrive on turn thirteen; all these units arrive anywhere along the line marked R. H. Anderson. The remaining Rebel batteries of Bondurant (turn eleven) and Hardaway's (turn twelve) enter from the extreme eastern edge of the West Woods beside the table lip. Troops in the Sunken Road are behind hasty works. Union reinforcements arrive at the opposite end from Anderson on turn seven and the Federal guns arrive from anywhere on the northeast side of the table on turn ten. Major General Longstreet arrives on turn eleven.

Terrain:

The terrain is flat apart from the important high ground of Piper's Ridge and the rise immediately in front of the Sunken Road Ð the former being higher than the latter. The road itself (as its name suggests) is sunken and should therefore provide an additional saving roll. The fields immediately behind the Sunken Road are broken.

Victory Conditions:

The Federals must inflict sixty percent casualties on the Confederates, thus forcing the Confederates to withdraw. The Confederates need to prevent this.
