The WargameThe scenario covers the period of time from 3:00 pm until 5:30 pm and comprises the 9th Union Army Corps' attack on Sharpsburg after it had crossed Burnside's Bridge; if you prefer a longer game, then start at 2:30 pm and end at 6:00 pm. Wilcox's regiments, after turn five, run out of ammo on a dice roll of 2, 3, 4 or 5. Harland must move in a straight line in the direction of Toombs and Drayton until attacked by A.P. Hill's men; the Federals cannot react to Hill's attack until after they pass the Blackfor Farm. Once the Rebels pass the farm, both Harland's and Scammon's brigades suffer "strategic surprise" for the next two turns. Nagle and Ferrero are not allowed to move until after Hill attacks. Even though the Union forces are on a tight leash, the Confederates really need to make the most of Hill's intervention. The Rebel brigades on the map have been amalgamated into one or two larger regiments, except for Jenkin's, which has three (one being the sharpshooters.) There may be a case for beefing up some of the Confederate units as stragglers were brought in as the situation became more critical. Hill's men are elite for all morale tests, but fire as being tired. DeploymentHill arrives on turn 2 in march column at point "H"; Carter's and Squire's batteries appear in Sharpsburg on turn 5. The following Federal batteries must remain on the eastern bank of Antietam creek: Simmond's Kentucky Battery; Battery E, 2nd U.S., and the 1st Ohio battery. Rodman and Cox are both in the ploughed field to the fight of Fairchild's regiments. TerrainThe ridge on which Read's artillery sits is higher than that on which the main Rebel defense is situated. The slopes around Cemetery Hill, along the Antietam, and the small creek down beside the Snavely house all count as rough for movement. Ploughed fields and cornfields are broken terrain; the corn stalks were well up at this time of year and therefore should reduce visibility. Victory ConditionsThe Union must drive the Confederates from the ridge and inflict a 60% loss on them; the Confederates must prevent this. Order of Battle Union9th Army Corps1st DivisionBrig. Gen.
