Antietam:
The Soldier's Battle

Book Review

by Dave Brauer

Author: John M. Priest.
Publisher: White Mane Publishing Co., Inc, Shippensburg, PA. Copyright: 1989.
ISBN 0-942597-09-5.

The caption on the dust cover of this book "... the author provides fact-filled drama, capturing the bravery, cowardice, ...of soldiers caught up in war', accurately depicts the flavor of this splendid examination of the Battle of Antietam. Quotes from contemporary sources are used to add color and emotions to the insights and details of this famous battle. Not only does this book provide insight into the thoughts and feelings of the combatants but also contains most of the details and facts one needs for generating scenarios based on this battle. There is an order of battle at the bade of the book which numerates participants and casualties down to regiments in many cases. The book contains over 70 maps, each with a scale for determining distances. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Civil War.

During the Christmnas shopping season, I observed a new offering from John Priest on the Battle of South Mountain. From my initial examination of the new book, I found it to be every bit as enticing as his work on Antietam.
