Flags of the Confederacy

Part III

Illustrated by Chris Johnston

This is the third and final part of our project to make known the flags that were found in the vault of the Confederate Memorial Hall in New Orleans. While some have been published elsewhere, many of the flags have been illustrated for the first time in our magazine, hopefully adding to the treasure trove of information that had previously been known about the flags of the Confederate armies. The editors are proud to have been a part of this project.

We feel that those who participate in miniature gaming in the Civil War have the ability to do historical research that not only benefits us on the wartable, but also can be passed on to those whose only love is academic in nature. Our thanks go out to Mr. Lionel Bienvenu, archivist at Jackson Barracks (home of the Washington Artillery) for providing us with access to photos taken of the flags in the 1950s, to Mr. Bernard Eble of the Confederate Memorial Hall, who graciously opened the vault to our peering eyes and let us see the actual flags, and to Chris Johnston and Jill Fisher for their illustrations.

Most of all, we thank our members who donated money in 1988 to make this project possible!

25TH LOUISIANA INFANTRY REGIMENT FLAG

The borders, stars, and letters are gold, the field is white, and the bars are blue. This flag, like most of the others is 48" x 48".

The following are six Louisiana regimental flags. All except the 14th have white borders, stars, and unit designations. Battle honors are black letters. The flag without any writing on it belonged to the 8th LA. It is a later flag than the one illlustrated in a previous issue.
