Bring on the Cavalry:

The Battle of Middleburg
June 19, 1863

by George Anderson

THE WARGAME

Begins at 8:00 A.M. and ends, due to failing light, at 7:45 P..M. Stuart was particularly protective of his artillery during this engagement. Therefore, if the position of the 13th Virginia is overrun, Hart's Battery must be withdrawn from the game along the turnpike. Once this happens, throw a die each turn for Moorman's battery. It will immediately withdraw on a roll of 1 or 2 or automatically, once Federal troopers put a foot on Mount Defiance. The Confederate artillery cannot return once it has begun to retreat.

Optional rule: The 1st Maine may have carried a number of Colt revolving rifles into action. Roll for these weapons as shown for the 2nd New York at the battle of Aldie. They are treated as repeating rifles (poor).

DEPLOYMENT

Set up is as per the map. The 1st Maine and 10th New York begin the garne mounted. The rest of the Union cavalry is dismounted and can be in any formarion the plaver wishes. Confederate cavalry to the west of the blacksmith's shop is mounted, urhile those to the east are dismounted.

TERRAIN

Again, all slopes are gentle and are therefore open; all woods and fields are broken terrain. Stone walls line portions of the Ashby Gap Turnpike.

VICTORY CONDITIONS

The Union cavalry musr capture and hold Mount Defiance and the wood directly to the south.
