JRIII TABLE SETUP

The map is divided into squares (grid dimensions on map.) Use the standard 40% and 60% effectiveness ratios for this scenario as detailed in the JOHNNY REB III game rules. At 40% reduction in force, no further advance is allowed; at 60%, units must retire to the rear lines.

CONFEDERATE

Chambliss' cavalry regiments are dismounted. Lee and Hampton are mounted, both in column. The artillery starts unlimbered and may get the +2 opening volley credit when they fire. Beckham may be placed with any artillery unit. Stuart is on Rice's Hill.

UNION

The 6th MI must begin the game dismounted. One half of the 1st VT Cavalry is placed in Hanover as shown on the map (dismounted behind hasty works), the 2nd half is supporting Elder's guns on Bunker Hill. The rapid fire JRIII rule for the Spencer 7-shot repeaters is in effect for this scenario. The 18th PA is dismounted behind hasty works, as is the 1st WV.

Custer had been promoted quite recently and had just assumed command of the Michigan brigade the day before the fight at Hanover. The rest of the units are at the player's discretion (mounted or dismounted).

BOTH

Units in both armies may start with one stand refused, and may start prone and/or use regimental skirmishers.

MOVEMENT

All streams are +1" movement penalty to cross. Slopes are +1" to climb (nothing to go down slope.) Fields are Broken Terrain (small farms, fences, hedges, etc.).

GAME LENGTH

Game runs from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. (16 turns.)

No units may advance towards the enemy until 2:00 (artillery fire, formation changes, and lateral or reverse movements are allowed until this time). The exception is Hampton, who is allowed to move his brigade to the cemetery vicinity.

FIRE MODIFIER

The +2 DRM for firing at mounted cavalry is suspended if the cavalry is charging.

OPTIONAL HORSEHOLDER RULE

When a regiment is dismounted, 1/2 of all figures may not fire to reflect the reduction in manpower assigned to watch the horses.

REINFORCEMENTS

CONFEDERATE

Wade Hampton's Brigade arrived (mounted in column formation) at 2:00 p.m. at the Westminster Pike. They had left the captured wagons under guardsome two miles away. Stuart had given orders to burn the Yankee wagons if the battle went against him. Hampton immediately moved to the right flank and occupied the fields between York Road and the school, straddling Mt. Olivet Cemetery supporting the Cobb's Legion artillery battery. Historically, Fitz Lee moved three regiments plus one battery past the school to support Hampton after the latter's arrival.

UNION

No reinforcements allowed.

GOAL

CONFEDERATE

Inflict more casualties on the Yankees than you take for a minor victory. Capture and hold the Carl (a.k.a. Karl) Forney Farm for a major victory. Capture and hold Hanover's center square for an overwhelming victory.

UNION

Inflict more casualties on the Rebels than you take for a minor victory. Capture and hold Mt. Olivet Cemetery for a major victory. Capture and hold the western portion of Rice's Hill (star point) for an overwhelming victory.

NOTES

Throughout the afternoon, Kilpatrick ordered small probing actions up the Rebel-controlled hills. Very little actual fighting occurred after the artillery exchange. This scenario assumes that Stuart and Kilpatrick were more aggressive in trying to dislodge one another from their respective positions.
