AUTHOR'S NOTESThe Federal players have a challenge. Grierison's horse soldiers will be hard pressed to reach the Reb entry point before their first brigades arrive. While the cavalry brigades have superior strength initially, the Rebel strength builds quickly, placing Federals in a tenuous position. Federal reinforcements also pose a challenge. The two infantry brigades largely out number the Rebel forces and can anchor the Federal position if they get there in time. But getting there early reduces their fighting ability due to fatigue. The silver lining for the Federals, as always, is their artillery batteries. Used well, these can turn the tide. The Confederate players have a different challenge. They must have patience awaiting for their forces to arrive and not take unnecessary loses plus still beat up on the Grierison. If the Confederates can do this, then they can pound the Federals to pieces with Bell's '400 lb. gorilla' of a brigade. OUTPOSTSOutposts are prepared positions forward of the main line. These positions are represented by a barricade with a single dismounted stand behind. Each stand has a fire value of 2 and a melee value of 1. The position provides a -1 modifier for fire combat and +1 melee combat modifier. If the stand is forced to retreat any distance or receives at least a Lively Fire result then the stand is removed from play. See SETUP & ARRIVALS for initial placement information (Rebs only.) TISHOMINGO CREEKThe Tishomingo Creek was flooded from recent heavy rain. Brigades may ford the creek at any point at a cost of 1/2 normal move. Artillery is prohibited from fording the creek. Brigades receive a +1 fire modifier for targets in the creek. Brigades in the creek have their melee die result reduced by 1. SETUP & ARRIVALSCONFEDERATE Place one dismounted stand in an outpost adjacent to the west side of the Tishomingo Bridge. This is an 'extra' stand (it represents about 40 to 50 men of Johnson's Brigade) and does not count against the numbers of stands shown in the Confederate OOB (Order of Battle) chart. The stand in the outpost has a 180 degree arc of fire. All arrivals come on the east edge of the map marked 'CSA Entry.' All cavalry and artillery come on in march column and limbered, respectively, except for Waring's brigade which may come on in march or field column. FEDERAL None on board at start. All of the Federals enter in march column or limbered, only via entry point A on the map. BOTH SIDES Cross reference both the Turn Record Chart (TRC) and the OOB for arrival times and locations. A battery or two enter alone, but if a battery enters with a brigade, it may be in any position of the column. The batteries attached to Grierson's Division are horse while the batteries under McMillen are foot. EARLY REINFORCEMENTSFEDERAL The Federal player may choose to have Hoge's and Wilken's brigades arrive 2 turns earlier. An asterisk is used as a reminder on the OOB and TRC. If chosen, the brigades arrive fatigued and receive a +1 (instead of +2 for being fresh.) This option must be selected by the end of Federal 1000 turn. GAME LENGTHThe game begins with the Federal 0800 turn and ends at the completion of the Confederate 1630 turn (see TRC.)WEAPONRYLong arms varied greatly between Federal and Confederate brigades. The following table is to be substituted for the one found on the Musketry & Canonade Chart in the rules booklet.
VICTORY CONDITIONSFEDERAL Exit the two non-spent brigades off the eastern edge of the Baldwyn Road. CONFEDERATE Control the Tishomingo bridge. BOTH SIDES If neither side achieves the above condition, use the Standard Victory Points Chart from the rules booklet. More Brice's Cross Roads July 10, 1864
