OUTPOSTS

Outposts are prepared positions forward of the main line. Fitzhugh Lee and Wade Hampton had set up outposts astride Brock and Piney Branch Church Roads in advance of their positions at Todd's Tavern.

These positions are represented by log barricades with a single dismounted cavalry stand within. Each position has a fire value of 2 and melee value of 1. The position provides a -1 modifier for fire combat and +1 melee combat modifier and terrain modifiers. If the stand is forced to retreat any distance or receives at least a Lively Fire result then the stand is removed from play.

FIELDWORKS

Federal and Confederate brigades may build Level 1 breastworks (barricades) by not performing any action for 2 consecutive game turns and Level 2 breastworks by not performing any action for 4 consecutive game turns.

WOODS

Woods cover the majority of the table. Only fields are open. All woods provide a -1/ +1 modifier.

SETUP AND ARRIVAL

CONFEDERATE

The circled numbers 1, 2 & 3, are the Confederate starting positions. Wickham's brigade starts on Brock Road at 1 while Lomax starts at Piney Branch Church Road at 2. Thomas' unlimbered battery sets up with either Lomax or Wickham (not shown on map.) All behind Level 1 works, but can move on the first turn.

Rosser, with Johnston's unlimbered battery, sets up at 3 on the west bank of the creek behind Level 2 works. NOTE: They can't move until 1100 (Turn 3).

All 3 brigades are in Double Line formation facing the table edges. See the OUTPOST rules for setting up outposts.

Stuart and the brigades of Young and Butler enter on the Catharpin road at the southwest edge (entry point C.)

FEDERAL

There are no Federal units on board at start. All of the Federals enter only either via entry point A (Brock Road or B (Piney Branch Church Road), per the Turn Record Chart (page 30.)

BOTH SIDES

Cross reference both the Turn Record Chart and the Arrival Column of the OOB for arrival times and locations. Units enter in march column or limbered.

GAME LENGTH

The game begins with the Federal 1000 turn and ends when there are no Confederate brigades left or by the completion of the Confederate 1830 turn.

WEAPONRY

Long arms varied greatly between Federal and Confederate brigades. The table shown below is to be substituted for the one found on the Musketry & Cannonade Chart in the rules booklet.

CAVALRY WEAPON RANGE
0-3"3+"-6"
2 BANDED RIFLED-MUSKETX1 X1
SPENCER REPEATERx3 X1
MUZZLE-LOADING CARBINEx1.5 X .5
SHARPS CARBINEX2 X1

VICTORY CONDITIONS

FEDERAL

A non-spent brigade of Gregg's Division is west of Corbin's Bridge (C) and a non-spent brigade of Merritt's Division has exited off the south end of the table via Brock Road South (D), by the completion of the Federal 1830 turn.

CONFEDERATE

Prevent Federals from achieving both conditions of victory.
