"Have We Met Before?"

Tenement and Bar Buildings

by Keith Stanley

If any of you are like me, you hate trying to throw together something for my gamers at the last minute. Hopefully you will appreciate this article. Everyone seems to be tight on time these days. For some reason, weather it is school, work, the wife, or you spent too much time watching television, to prepare for what the players want to do. My players always want to know what the building looks like and what's his or her name to everyone they meet. I think that each building has its own characters and interesting features that add a great deal to a good night of gaming. I feel that it is bad taste to have to reach into my bag and pull out my generic bar layout, the one with the coffee ring in the comer and potato chip grease spots on it.

The bar that is filed with interesting characters like Moe the bartender, Carla the waitress, and Ug the bouncer.

The buildings in this article are from the town of Daggerford in the Forgotten Realms campaign. If you are not in Daggerford. I see no reason why they cannot be placed into some part of your campaign, or with a little work, into another game system.

I wish everyone good gaming and don't stay up too late preparing for next week's adventure.

Bjorn's Tenements

This one story building is starting to fall into disrepair. It is not much to live in, but it is warm and relatively safe. Raffick, the man who lives in the first room, is the landlord of this building and has a habit of being able to acquire most things any group of adventurers might need. He knows a lot of men and women in town and will usually look the other way when something is going on.

Raffick is a human of average size and build. He is strictly a businessman now, after a short career as a thief with Bjorn ten years ago. Raffick has short black hair and a neatly trimmed goatee. He is third level and owns a ring of protection, and a +1 dagger.

The entrance of the building is rather plain, with only a desk, chair, stove, and a small bucket of coal to furnish it. Any money that comes in quickly gets stored in his room across the hall. Raffick's room is the most secure and best furnished in the tenements. There is a strongbox in the chest with an average of seventy-five to 100 gold pieces in it. The rest of the rooms are furnished with a sturdy bunk-bed, table, two chairs, a box with a lockable lid, stove, and an open closet with hooks to hang equipment on.

Prices are 5 GP per week, (7 per tenday) and 18 GP per month. Bjorn sends an armed escort down from Waterdeep once a month to collect the rent from Raffick.

Lady Luck Tavern

This lively drinking spot used to be a warehouse that was converted into an adventurers bar. It is a two-story stone structure with a wooden balcony circling the main floor. The Lady Luck is a popular place for soldiers and adventurers who come to tell tales, sine songs, and relax after battle. There are few in this place who are not armed. and skilled in their use, which helps to make this a relatively safe drinking spot.

All around the tavern are various weapons, banners, trophies, and monster heads. The large stone pillar in the center of the room is filled with mementos of those who fallen in previous battles. A large petrified dragon wing decorates most of the north wall like a blaclc canopy. The north-east corner has a massive color map of the Sword Coast that extends far our to sea. Much news and rumor are traded around this map.

There is a silver goblet that sits untouched, filled with wine at one end of the bar. This is reserved for the goddess Tyrnora herself and woe be the visitor who touches this goblet.

The owner of the tavern is a human male named Owenden. He is a chaotic good, third level priest of Tyrnora. Although he no longer adventurers, he does own a +1 mace and bracers of AC5 which come in handy during the occasional brawl. Owenden is a fairly good looking, squarejawed sort of man with long blond hair he keeps tied back.

The Lady Luck has a good ale selection with the average price being a silver piece. The tavern also has a decent liquor and wine list at slightly above average prices. Food consists of a large portion of daily stew of wild game and vegetables served with biscuits for three silvers.
