Weapons and Armor
of the Undead

Part I: Balmer

by Lloyd Brown

The Undead

When alive, Balmer was a moneylender on Oerth. He found that he had no qualms about ordering the abuse or murder of delinquent accounts. He had a mercurial temper and would sometimes allow a person a few extra day leniency if he felt like it. Just as often, he would take several times the amount of the loan in property of some sore, leaving the borrower bruised and penniless, but debt free. His clients never knew where they stood.

The well-meaning but weakly led authorities of Leukish were unable to track Balmer down until he overreached himself and killed one of their own. Foolish enough to stay in town, Balmer was quickly caught and hung. Apparently Yeenoghu, or some other power, thought Balmer's job on Oerth was not yet finished, because the moneylender returned as a ghoul and has since preyed on the dead of Leukish as he once preyed on the living,

The Armor

Balmer's leather armor was completely destroyed in his final battle for his freedom and life. It would provide no protection if its magic were removed. Just like the torn body of the undead can still rend the flesh of the living, the armor's magic still defends him. It confers protection equal to a shield spell, including complete immunity to magic missiles. This defense extends all around his body, not just the front. After his death, the armor also began to protect him from some of the banes of the undead.

Balmer assumes that the magic was enhanced by the power that is keeping him on Oerth. He doesn't understand it, but silently thanks it when its defenses are called on. While wearing the armor, Balmer takes only half damage from silver of holy water. The exception is holy water created by a priest of Pholtus, the god of Law, which causes him double normal damage.
