Fort Eustus
US Army Transportation Museum

Fort Eustus, VA (USA)

Summary

This was an excellent stop for an hour and a quarter--perhaps a little rushed on my part to see everything, but it did allow time to walk through the museum a second time to see other aspects we may have overlooked the first time.

The old adage "amateurs talk tactics and professionals talk logistics" hits home in this museum. Considering today's 1:15 or so ratio between tooth and tail (fighting men to supply troops), the importance of moving supplies, troops, and equipment in both front and rear areas cannot be understated.

Don't be put off by the increased security, just allow an extra 15 minutes for the extra processing.

The Army Transportation Museum complex occupies 6 acres at the entrance to Fort Eustis, Virginia, 11 miles south of Williamsburg, off 1-64 on Routh 105.

The main museum building houses exhibits in chronological order focusing on Army transportation from colonial days to present. Videos, uniforms, equipment, dioramas and models demonstrate contributions to the growth of our nation. It also contains a research library and auditorium.

Extensive outside displays feature fixed and rotary-wing aircraft, tugboats and land craft, trucks and material handling vehicles, steam locomotives and rail cars, and a few experimental vehicles.

The Museum is open to the public daily from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, closed Mondays and Federal holidays. It is handicapped accessible, and has recreational vehicle parking. Admission is free.
