The "Lightning Men" of the 78th Infantry Division, 309th regiment, landed in France on November 22, 1944. Their mission was to fight for freedom, democracy, the American way of life, and, most of all, for each other.

The Division's history dates back to World War I. By the autumn of 1944, it was thought that the 78th would not see much action, as the war would surely be over by Christmas! At that time the 78th was sent to the infamous Hurtgen Forest for its baptism by fire. Although being a "green" outfit, the newcomers did an outstanding job, capturing the German stronghold of Schmidt. After taking part in the defensive fighting during the Battle of the Bulge, the "Lightning Men" resumed the offensive, capturing the dams on the river Roer. The Division then participated in the capture, and was the first unit to cross, the Lundenorff Bridge at Remagen.

Now, fifty-eight years later, the mission of the 78th Infantry Re-enactment Unit is to preserve history, and to honor the memory of veterans who fought and sacrificed all so that we could enjoy the freedoms that we have today.

Over the past several years, the 78th has worked hard by donating their time, effort and energy, becoming one of the premier World War II re-enacting units on the East Coast. The unit has grown to include troops from New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania regions.

Each member of the group is a collector and historian of the U.S. Army during the Second World War. Each contributes items from their own personal collection of original uniforms, weapons, equipment, and vehicles. All U.S. World War II weapons, from pistols, rifles, machine guns, mortars, and even a 75mm Pack Howitzer are represented, while the extensive vehicle collection includes an assortment of jeeps, a weapons carrier, and even a few bicycles.

This year and every year at the Mid Atlantic Air Museum's World War II Weekend, the 78th will have set up an actual working field camp complete with original tents, communications equipment, and defensive positions. For the third year, they will be occupying the grounds in the French village. They will also play a major role in the re-created field battle.

We invite you to stop by and see how the individual soldier lived during the Second World War. Our members would love to talk to you and answer any questions you might have, so please feel free to do so.
