Panzerarmee Afrika

Part III

by Dave Geisz

The Flak battalions of the armored division generally had 700 officers and men, 4 light machine guns, 18 20 cm AA/At guns and 8 88cm AA/At guns. Most of the light flak was self propelled on the SDKFZ 7. Rommel's main weapon in the campaign was the all purpose "88".

According to some British writers, Rommel denuded his supply bases of anti-aircraft protection to use the 88's in the field where the action was hottest.

My own table top T.O. is follows:

    3 S/P vehicles with 3.7 cm guns
3 S/P vehicles with quad 20 cm guns
    2 Towed 8.8 cm guns
    1 VW jeep with crew
1 APC with 2 machine guns and 4 man crew

I would have liked to have pictures of the VW jeep, 8.8 cm gun and prime mover, and the SDKFZ-7, but I was in the process of moving after being transferred to Charleston, W.Va. Hopefully, by next issue, we will have the appropriate pictures ready for publication.

I appreciate the letters which have been coming in on my series of articles. Apparently there are quite a few of us Afrika Korps buffs scattered about the country.
