Hannibal is resting, receiving envoys from various Gallic tribes when the report comes in: Upset with the Carthaginian "invasion" of their territory, the Taurini has broken off the attack against the Insubres, mobilized the whole levy, and are marching to drive the Carthaginians out of their lands. Hannibal must fight with a tired army, against a mob of untrained but motivated Gauls. THE ARMIESConverted from 1:50 to 1:80 as that is the way troops were mounted. The Taurini and their allies

Total: Notes: Veterans: These were Gauls that would be sent from one tribe to another, to fulfill partnership arrangements. They were usually the best the tribe could offer, being well protected, veteran fighters. Select Warriors: Gauls who were not yet Veterans. Levy: This was the bulk of the Gaul warriors had no experience in warfare, yet were called out to fight when the select could not do the job. Adolescents: The boys were not allowed to join the levy until they reached their majority. Sometimes they were pressed into service as skirmishers against Hellenistic armies, something they were ill suited for. Huntsmen: Gauls used the bow to hunt, but not in war. However only those who were good shots were formed into "hunting groups" with warriors to hunt game. In time of war is quite probable that these good shooting Gauls were grouped into ad hoc units. Insubres Nobles: This was a typical way to insure trust between Gallic nations. Hannibal has asked for and received hostages to assure the Insubres' cooperation. However, they can always be used in combat but only as a last resort. Devalued Carthaginians: This veteran army was exhausted after crossing the Alps. It has been devalued to regulars. African Spearmen: The members of the phalanx operated in texiarchia of 8 files across by 8 deep.[Asklep. Taktika II 9.] This could be halved to form 16 ranks deep if necessary. We have no proof the Carthaginians used Macedonian organization, since their contacts were Hellenic. In fact they may not have worn body armor at all. Only the Sacred Band apparently did, and they have remounted by this time. The mail shirts turned over to the Romans before the start of the 3rd Punic war has no bearing on what Peoni spearmen wore at the start of the second. A "simple" phalanx was 4086, and Hannibal liked to operate his spearmen in two phalanxes. So it follows that Hannibal had his spearmen in two 4,000 men phalanxes. Later, as he could replace his losses from African skirmishers and armor his Peoni with captured mail, he would increase his numbers. Spanish Veterans (Scutarii): These were usually grouped by tribes, or clans. Like most barbarians they used a decimal system with 200-500-800-1000 being the common groupings. They are armed with pila (solferrum) and swords. Also it is believed they fought with spears, but never both at the same time. Spanish Light armed were expected to fight hand to hand, if the opportunity presented itself. Hence the LI rating. Terrain Place a stream -- swollen with runoff and cannot be crossed. Units driven into the stream are routed. There is also a 3" ravine along the stream bed. Units in the ravine cannot be seen or fired at. Victory Hannibal needs to defeat the Taurini, but with as little loss as possible, as his army must be preserved. First side to lose 50% of their major units: HC, LC, or HI has lost. However the Gauls may force a draw if the one following occurs:
2. They destroy 30% of Hannibal's army. 3. They destroy all the elephants. Finally if the Gauls kill Hannibal, the invasion is over and the Gauls win.
