HESS, HANS-GEORG (125-LIFE-1985)
Softbound edition published by Hess-Press in 1987, the English edition contains 46 pages, 3 photographs; the German edition contains 96 pages, 65 photographs. Both books are available as a set through SHARKHUNTERS, hand-signed by OBLT. HESS. While not a true autobiography, this small but important book is included in this section because of its FIRST-PERSON nature. In addition to a brief history of U-995, this book contains a collection of personal stories and remembrances of various crew members from their experiences on the boat. The author was the last wartime captain of the boat, which is on display in Germany. At age 21, HESS was the youngest combat submarine Skipper of WW II and possibly of any War. He won the KNIGHTS CROSS. U-995 is on display in Germany, and is the last TYPE VII-C left in the world. While the translation is not perfect, this is one of the very few instances in English where the accounts of enlisted men can be found. The book is highly recommended and is readily available from SHARKHUNTERS. Check your 4th ANNUAL CATALOG. Why wait for all 119 BOOK REVIEWS to come out in our KTB Magazine?
