U-Boat and Submarine Factoids

Did You Know?

by OBLT Ernst Schmidt (10-1983)

Little Known Submarine Facts

  • U-Boats transported raw material between Japan and Germany? Preserved food, including bread, were packed and sealed in containers of pure tin, later to be melted down and used in the War industry;

  • In all during the War, 41 U-Boats (36 German and 5 Italian) operated in the Far East? 30 were lost by enemy action, 5 were taken over by the Japanese, two surrendered after VE-Day to the Allies on their way back to Germany, 4 finally reached home. The highest number of U-Boats on patrol at any one time in the Far East was 11;

  • as against proportions on U-Boats destroyed (30) in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, 149 ships of 925,042 tons of the Allies were claimed?

    In clear water, a submerged submarine can be spotted from the air at depths to 100 feet?

    American subs of WW II vintage had a compliment of about eighty, and did not carry doctors. All medical duties, including emergency operations, are carried out by competent pharmacist mates. During one patrol of USS SILVERSIDES (SS 236), an apendectomy was done in the wardroom on the mess table, by the Pharmacist Mate.

    German U-Boats carried around 50 or 60 men (depending on the Type). The funkmaat (radioman) sometimes doubled as the medical guy on board. An operation was performed on a sailor aboard U-505 while on patrol.

    This quiz began in KTB #102 and is only intended to improve your knowledge of submarine and naval history.

    Answers to last month’s quiz:

    31. The only ROYAL NAVY aircraft carrier to survive the War was HMS FURIOUS. She was originally a cruiser, then converted to an aircraft carrier.

    32. The ship’s bands that were playing in the ‘BATTLE OF THE BANDS’ competition on Saturday night, 6 December, 1941 at Pearl Harbor, were from USS PENNSYLVANIA, USS TENNESSEE, USS ARGONNE and USS DETROIT. The band from USS ARIZONA had been eliminated earlier in the competition.

    33. Oddly enough, the Japanese midget submarines that took part in the assault on Pearl Harbor were designed in Germany, but were built in Japan. During the War, one of these captured midgets was displayed in TIMES SQUARE in New York City. My personal guess is that this is the same midget that was at the Lighthouse Museum in Key West for so many years and now in another museum.

    34. The I.J.N. had 27 submarine deployed in the attack on Pearl Harbor. Five of them carried two-man midget submarines.

    35. The 20th most successful American combat submarine Skipper was Royce L. Gross, C.O. of USS SEAWOLF & USS BOARFISH with 13-1/2 ships sunk on 7 war patrols.
