DONALD TITCOMB (2516-1992) writes: “In Newport, Rhode Island, in a small veteran’s cemetery, is a plain white marble stone marked MACHINENMAAT GÜNTHER HEDER, U-550, 24.6.22 until 6.5.1944 He lies a few yards from another U-Boat sailor. That stone reads EIN UNBEKANNTER DEUTSCHER SEEMANN VON U-853 5.5.1945. How Herr Heder came to be buried in Newport I can only guess.
