The first Skipper of U-119 was Kplt. Zech until 16 April, 1943 when he went to the 12th Flotille HQ and Kplt Horst-Tessen von Kameke took command. U-119 was with the 12th U-Bootflotille based at Bordeaux.

U-119 had a mine-laying mission in the Skagerrak in August 1942; another off Iceland over 20/21 February, 1943. Her final mission brought her across the Atlantic to lay mines off Nova Scotia and to resupply Frontboots in the Western Hemisphere.
