by RADM Otto Kretchmer
Here is more of the letter from RADM OTTO KRETSCHMER (122-LIFE-1985), and he refers to this photograph. "The photo shows me holding the music of the KRETSCHMER MARCH and a bouquet of flowers presented to me as part of the ceremony by a pretty secretary of the Naval Dockyard, Fraulein von Essen. At this ceremony I presented the Commander of the Regiment with a life belt of the British tanker CONCH. The Regimental Commander, a Colonel of WW I vintage, was well known as more or less the only Army officer in WW I to have escaped from Russian captivity in Siberia and succeeded to reach China. The KRETSCHMER MARCH was composed by the leader of the Regimental Band and intonated at the ceremony. The MARCH was played always when a U-Boat left port or arrived from patrol."
