WWII Japanese Submarine Losses

I-23, RO-30, RO-32

by Harry Cooper

We continue with the listing of IJN submarine losses:

26 February, 1942...I-23 under Shibata was lost through unknown causes. The date is not clear nor is the location or the cause of sinking. It is presumed that I-23 was lost through a diving accident or other type of marine casualty. I-23 was last heard from south of Oahu on 14 February, 1942.

1 April, 1942.....RO-30 was stricken from the active list as over aged.

1 April, 1942.....RO-32 was stricken from the active list as over aged.

For your understanding, Japanese submarines who had an "I" number were boats over 1,000 tons. "RO" boats were between 500 and 1,000 tons and the "HA' boats were less than 500 tons. These letters are the first three in the Japanese alphabet "I" "RO" "HA"
