The Mountain House

Tuning The Mountain House

As GMs read this setting, they should fine-tune the house as they go, keeping in mind the inhabitant (who may or way not appear on the list above)

Location

Exactly where the Mountain House is located is up to the GM. However, here are some notes that can be used to fill in details about the surrounding area.

The Mountain

The Mountain House is set atop a small mountain next to a larger mountain. just a hair below 5,000 feet, it occupies the flat space at the top of the little mountain. When the accountant bought the land, it was cheap: he had to have a space blasted from the rock to make room for a building.

The land around the house is rough and unsuitable for any commercial purpose; it is also state land a protected as a park (offers to buy up the house and it to the park have all met with failure).

The Road

Before space could be blasted for a house, a to had to be constructed. Consisting of steep grades sharp switchbacks, it qualifies as a road, though that can't be driven quickly. Some of the more paranoid inhabitants might have booby-trapped it at certain points with explosives. A secret tunnel might also lead from the basement of the house to point along the road somewhere, allowing quick egress in an emergency.

The road leads to a gravel county road, which accesses a paved two-lane road, which in turn leads to a major highway that goes to the nearby city. There's a gate on "the driveway" that keeps casual visitors from driving up to the Mountain House.

Building Codes

The accountant got his house built right before local legislators ruled that nothing could be built above 5,000 feet. Since the surrounding land is state owned, this means that the Mountain House isn't likely to have any competition or even any close neighbors for the foreseeable future.

Local Amenities

The city is a 30 minute drive. Suburbs have sprung up about 15 minutes away, however, so basic goods can be purchased relatively close by. The Mountain House is only a ten-minute helicopter flight from the city, via he heli-pad on the roof.
