FOOTNOTES(1) There
is some disagreement about the size of the
force. Mrs. Sartorius (66) gives it as 600
Sudanese, 200 Egyptians and 50 cavalry. Wylde
ill), who was in Suakin at the time, gives the
figure as 700 Sudanese, 300 Egyptians and old
soldiers, and 30 bashi-bazuk cavalry. Colvile
(19) gives the total figure of 700 Sudanese,
while Royle (101) says the column totalled 700
men, of whom only 400 were Sudanese. Wingate
(95) says there were 200 bashi-bazuks and 500
Sudanese, while Jackson (41) breaks down a
total number of 700 men into 400 Sudanese, 225
Egyptians and 25 bashi-bazuk cavalry (though
this totals only 6501). It would sees that the
column numbered no sore than 700 men, of which
about 200 were Egyptians, up to 50 bashi-bazuk
cavalry, and between 400-500 Sudanese, and an
undetermined number of gunners for the single
mountain gun,
