Museum Miniatures

15mm Early Byzantines

Review by Carl Stefanelli

Distributed by Military Miniatures of Texas, 925 S Mason Rd, Suite 142, Caty TX 77450.

Over the past few years Museum Miniatures has produced some truly exceptional 15mm ranges - Normans, Carthaginans, Renaissance Landsknechts and now Early Byzantines. All of these ranges are cast in pewter, run on the large size (closer to 18mm) and are proportional and very well sculpted.

The Early Byzantines (493-578 AD) include the armies of Belisarius who fought the Persians and Vandals. The Museum Miniature range includes 6 cavalry figures (two with lance, two with sword and two with bow) plus a Goth Symmachoi figure.

The Skoutatoi heavy infantry comes with sword or spear. I wished that the spear was longer and better resembled the 12 ft thrusting spear they used rather than the short spear the figure carries. I would also have preferred a boss on the shield. The lighter infantry figures include bow, javelin and sling. Additionally there are two types of command - foot and cavalry. The Veni Vidi Vici Late Roman Shield nsfers will work with this range. And there is plenty of time to get it ready for the Historicon 98 theme.

As with all of the Museum figures in the newer ranBes there is a lot to work with. The sculpting is sharp and deep with plenty of detail. There is no flash and mold lines are minimal. My one major suggestion to Museum Miniatures is to include more figure variety with irregular troops.
