Here's the schedule: Fri, 17 Apr 1:55pm - opening ceremony Sat, 18 Apr 8am - noon, Session 3 Sun 19 Apr 9am - 1pm, Session 6 & dealer tables open More on Recon... There will be a number of significant events at this year's Recon. Howard Swanson, Jeff Lista, Hugh Downing, Dan Miller, and Hal Goff will be running the Armati Tournament in 15mm! 1st place, 2nd place, and Tourney Honorable Mention will receive intro armies provided by Wargames of Triadelphia. Our special guest this year is Hal Thinglum, editor of the indomitable MWAN. Hal's contributions to the hobby over the years have been priceless. We really appreciate Hal taking time out of his busy schedule in order to make it down to Tampa for our show. I'm pretty sure the Chicago weather will be less than hospitable while Tampa will be just lovely. Hopefully we can keep Hal from sun-bathing naked and running around like a college kid on Spring Break during his stay here. The challenge is on to wow Hal with visually appealing and well-run games. Also, John Hill, author of Squad Leader, Johnny Reb, and most recently, Johnny Reb III will be here and will assist in running ACW games throughout the convention to introduce players to his rules and make them aware of the intricacies of combat during that era. Thanks in advance to John for coming! Also, let me give a special thanks to the Gainesville Garrison (once again) for their commitment to Recon. Look for the PEL in this issue to answer any other questions you may have. Keep in mind, due to events in the Middle East and being a little late rallying the troops, this PEL is probably only a 70% solution (instead of the desired 90%). In any case, here's what we have so far and expect some eye-popping games to show up (as is always the case!). Most importantly, pre-register and make your hotel reservations early (no later than 10 April and make sure you tell them it's for RECON). If the Recon staff can assist you in any way, let us know. The game rooms open at 9 am on Friday . At this time, dealers can start setting up and Friday Afternoon/Evening gamemasters can begin setting up their games if they desire. Chuck Holabird will be running the table set up and it will be fairly well fixed, but if you have any concerns, let Chuck or Craig know and we'll see if there's room for adjustment. On a side note: If you have registered as a gamemaster, but have not paid your pre-registration fees, YOU ARE NOT PRE-REGISTERED (and consequently won't get the discounted entry fee)! To get the pre-registration savings, you must pay at least two weeks prior to the convention. All Recon participants will pay to get into the convention, NO EXCEPTIONS. and now, the RECON PEL! Professional Figure Painters are not allowed into the competition. Categories are:
1. Figures may not be placed on any terrain or special cloth, as the competition is based on painting and not terrain or display. 2. A double-blind judging system will be used. Each entry is given a number code, so that the painters name is unknown to the judges. 3. Entry forms will be available at the convention registration desk. Painters will be required to list their name, name of the entry, period, & year represented. 4. Judging Categories - judges will rate each displayed item in the five categories depicted with 5 points being the best and 0 the worst. The five categories are Figure Selection & Preparation, Painting, Shading, Detailing, and Basing. Top figures will be well-sculpted, historically accurate in colors, definition highlighted by shading, details painted on (buttons, eyes, etc.), and appropriately based depending on the size of the figure. Professional figure painting volunteers will conduct the judging.
