I had the pleasure of being Historical POC for JONESCON V here in Gainesville, Florida this past weekend (Jan 16-18). This multi-genre gaming convention started 5 years ago as an extremely low-budget, student-run convention at the University of Florida. Each year has seen continued growth with this year seeing the 1st organized attempt of attracting historical gamers. Since this was our first attempt with a historical program, we planned on only 4 historical tables continuously running games throughout the convention schedule. Looks like we'll have to expand in the future as we actually could not fit all of the convention goers into our scenarios. Look forward to at least 10 historical tables next year as I fully expect HMGS South and Mid-South to contribute games and players. The historical games included Austerlitz using NAPOLEON'S BATTLES, Speyerbach (War of Spanish Succession) using WARGAMING THE AGE OF MARLBOROUGH, Zorndorf - 1758 using PIQUET one day and FREDERICK'S BATTLES the next, a Great Northern War scenario using PIQUET, an 1866 Austro-Prussian Conflict again using PIQUET, a couple 1944 WW2 microarmor scenarios using TRACKS, Battle of the Boyne hosted by Pat Condray using his ruleset WARGAMING THE AGE OF MARLBOROUGH, Irun again run by Pat Condray using VIVA EL CRISTO REY, and a surprising hit - SAMURAI BATTLES run by Deke Ashton using a homebrew set of rules. Look for all these games at RECON in April.
Attendance was over 200 not including some late walk-ins which probably added another 25. The more notable dealers included Pat Condray and Editions Brokaw, the Travelling Mage, Fortress Games, and Emperor's Headquarters represented by Bernie Chambers. I congratulate Mike Jones and Pete Taylor on another great weekend of gaming & fun in Gainesville!
